When sourcing from a China API 5L pipe factory, understanding the nuances of the specification is vital for project success. API 5L covers seamless and welded steel line pipe. It includes standard-weight and extra-strong threaded line pipe; and standard-weight and extra-strong plain-end, regular-weight plain-end, special plain-end, extra-strong plain-end, extremely extra-strong plain-end pipe; as well as bell and spigot and through-the-flowline(TFL) pipe.
Seamless (SMLS): No welded seam. It is made from a solid round steel 'billet' which is heated and pushed or pulled over a form until the steel is shaped into a hollow pipe. SMLS is preferred for high-pressure applications where any risk of seam failure must be avoided.
ERW (Electric Resistance Welded): Made by cold-forming a sheet of steel into a cylindrical shape. Current is then passed between the two edges of the steel to heat the steel to a point at which the edges are forced together to form a bond without the use of welding filler material.
LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded): Uses a single longitudinal weld, often used for large diameter and high wall thickness applications. This is the backbone of major oil and gas cross-country pipelines.
In your procurement process, you will encounter PSL1 and PSL2. PSL1 is a standard quality for line pipe where mechanical and chemical requirements are loose. PSL2 has additional testing requirements, stricter chemical physicals, along with different ceiling limits of mechanical properties, and require Charpy impact testing conditions.
