AISI 4340 Steel Introduction

AISI 4340 steel is a medium carbon, low alloy steel known for its toughness and strength in relatively large sections. As a nickel chromium molybdenum steel, it is generally supplied hardened and tempered in the tensile range of 930 - 1080 Mpa. It offers excellent shock and impact resistance, as well as wear and abrasion resistance. Its good ductility in the annealed condition allows for efficient bending or forming.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary characteristics of AISI 4340 alloy steel?
AISI 4340 is a medium carbon, low alloy steel known for its exceptional toughness and strength, particularly in large sections. It offers high fatigue strength and good ductility.
What is the typical supply condition for these steels?
The steel is commonly supplied in hot forged, hot rolled, or cold drawn conditions. It can be delivered annealed or Quenched & Tempered (QT) with black or machined surfaces.
What industries utilize 4340 alloy steel?
It is widely used in Aerospace (landing gear), Automotive, Oil & Gas drilling, and heavy-duty mechanical engineering for components like gears, shafts, and axles.
Can AISI 4340 be surface hardened?
Yes, pre-hardened and tempered 4340 steel can be further surface hardened using flame or induction hardening methods, as well as nitriding.
What testing standards are applied to the forged products?
Products undergo rigorous testing including Ultrasonic Test (UT) according to SEP 1921-84, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and grain size analysis per ASTM standards.
What size ranges are available for round bars?
We offer round bars with diameters ranging from 6mm up to 1200mm to meet various industrial requirements.
